Rheumatism – What Is Rheumatism?
“Rheumatism” is commonly used by people as a general nonspecific term referring to conditions afflicting the joints and connective tissues. Rheumatism can describe arthritic conditions of the joints due to wear and tear as well as autoimmune joint dysfunction.
People with Rheumatic disorders may experience:
- Back Pain
- Neck Pain
- Bursitis
- Tendonitis
- Capsulitis – inflammation of a joint capsule, such as in the shoulder
- Ankylosing Spondylitis – an immune disorder, affecting peripheral joints
- Osteoarthritis – generic term for arthritis of the joints, characterized by pain and cartilage degeneration in a joint
Some rheumatic diseases are caused by autoimmune disorders, such as lupus. Generally autoimmune disorders aren’t well understood. These disorders, like arthritis, can be treated with therapy and medication, but they often cannot be cured.
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a systemic autoimmune disorder that attacks primarily the joints. Clinical diagnosis of this disorder is generally made based on physical examination, reported symptoms, X-rays, and blood investigations.
The exact cause of rheumatoid arthritis is unknown, but has been linked with vitamin D deficiency, viral infections and genetic factors.
Treatment Options for Rheumatic Conditions
Unfortunately, standard treatment of rheumatism is often not ideal. Medications often have only temporary results while long term use is associated with multiple side effects.
Acupuncture, and herbal remedies have increased in popularity in recent years. Dietary omega-3 fatty acids, Boswellic Acid and Devil’s Claw are some alternatives which have shown promise in treating pain, ache and stiffness associated with rheumatism.
